Cacouna is located along the Saint-Laurent River and is part of Rivière-du-Loup. Erected on a series of plateaus that rise from the St. Lawrence River to an altitude of nearly 200 meters. This rugged stepped topography explains the presence of several spectacular waterfalls on the Loup River (Bas-Saint-Laurent), in the center of the city. These falls were exploited for power generation, which in turn allowed the installation of many small industries. Even today, the city remains one of the main industrial centers of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region.
